Pierre Poilievre says no to free medication for Windsor, but the NDP fought back
WINDSOR – On Tuesday, Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives voted against getting free birth control to 9 million Canadians and free diabetes medications for 3.7 million Canadians. The NDP secured these measures as a first step in a national pharmacare framework.
“It’s shameful that the Conservatives tried to block the people from Windsor getting free medication,” said NDP MP Brian Masse (Windsor West). “New Democrats forced the Liberals to act, and now the Conservatives have shown whose side they’re on as they tried to stop Canadians from getting free birth control and diabetes medications and devices every step of the way. Pierre Poilievre don’t want you to pay less for your medications because he’s in the pocket of Big Pharma. New Democrats are fighting for you, not the rich and powerful.”
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh urged the Conservatives to withdraw their amendment to the Pharmacare Act that would block the bill but, on Monday, Poilievre refused and remained steadfast in blocking these measures which would lower costs for millions of Canadians.
The last Conservative government cut $43.5 billion from the health care system and gave $60 billion in tax cuts to CEOs and wealthy corporations.
“While Conservatives just obstruct, New Democrats are changing people’s lives with free medications,” said Masse. “No matter the size of your wallet, Canadians should have the health care they need. New Democrats will keep fighting against Conservative attacks and standing up for hard-working Canadians.”
